If you already invest in SEO, you may be wondering whether GEO is something new to learn or just a rebrand. The honest answer is that GEO builds directly on SEO, but it changes what “winning” looks like. Here is how the two compare.
SEO wins rankings. GEO wins citations.
Traditional SEO earns a position in the list of blue links. The user still clicks through and lands on your site. GEO, Generative Engine Optimisation, earns a mention or citation inside an AI answer from ChatGPT, Gemini or Google’s AI Overviews. The user may never see a list of links at all; they get an answer, and your job is to be part of it.
What stays the same
- Technical health. If an AI crawler cannot reach or render your pages, you cannot be cited. Speed, crawlability and clean markup matter as much as ever.
- Authority. Models, like search engines, lean on sources they trust. Links, mentions and a strong reputation still count.
- Good content. Clear, accurate, genuinely useful content is the raw material for both.
What changes with GEO
- Entities over keywords. GEO cares that a model understands who you are, what you do and where, as a clearly defined entity, not just that you repeat a phrase.
- Consistency across the web. An AI forms its view of you from many sources. Inconsistent descriptions weaken you; consistent ones compound.
- Answer-shaped content. Content that states a clear answer and then supports it is easier for a model to quote than a meandering article.
Do you have to choose?
No. This is not SEO versus GEO. The smartest approach runs them together: the technical and authority work serves both, while a layer of entity, structured-data and answer-focused work captures the AI surfaces. Dropping SEO to chase GEO would remove the foundation GEO stands on.
